一つ前の記事でご紹介した「フィリピン海外研修」も折り返し地点を過ぎました。
HP担当者も引率教員として合流したので、現地から最新の状況をレポートします。

　

8月9日の「オープンデー」は、これまでの学びを一度リフレッシュさせるため、ショッピングモールでお土産を買ったり、夕食のお店を自分で選んだりして、思い思いに過ごしました。翌日は、これまでの振り返りや午後のアクティビティに向けた事前学習を行い、後半戦がスタートしました。

NGO団体「LOOB」（ローブ）には、現地スタッフのほか、インターンシップで参加している大学生スタッフもいます。歳の近い日本人がいる安心感から、午前中は彼らに相談しながら生徒が自ら考えたアイスブレイクを実施し、フィリピンでの学びを振り返りました。以下にその一部を紹介します。

　

Q.「フィリピンに来て、『私はやっぱり日本人だな』と思った瞬間は？」
A.「 トイレットペーパーをそのまま流したくなること。」
A. 「コンビニでお箸が欲しくなったこと。(ダメもとでお願いしてみたら貰えてすごく嬉しかった。)」

Q. 「海外研修に行く前の自分に何かアドバイスをするとしたら？」
A. 「じゃがりこ（スナック菓子）をたくさん持ってくればよかった！日本製品も多く売っているけど、あの味が恋しい…」
A. 「一緒に行く同級生や現地で出会うフィリピンの人たちと仲良くなれるか不安だったけど、『そんな心配は要らなかったよ』って伝えたい！」

　

日課になっている日本語シェアリングが終わると別の会場へ車で移動し、SDGsのワークショップが始まります。

前夜の大雨の影響で、予定していたカラフナンの衛生埋め立て場(Calajunan Sanitary Landfill)への訪問は叶いませんでしたが、そこで働く人々へのインタビューを通じて理解を深め、フェアトレード製品であるペーパービーズブレスレットの製作を体験しました。

　

　

８月１１日は現地の小学校を訪問するプログラムです。まずは午前中のワークショップでフィリピンの教育事情を学び、家庭の事情や経済的な理由で学校に行けない子どもたちがいることを知りました。学校で勉強できることが当たり前ではないことを理解し、生徒たちはそれぞれ自身の学校生活と重ね合わせて気づくことがあったようです。

一方で、訪問中は現地の子どもたちと楽しい時間を過ごすことが大切だと考え、事前に準備した折り紙で何を作るか検討し、教えたい日本文化や遊びの計画を書き出したりしました。「おはよう」「いただきます」などの定番だけでなく、「せっかくならもっとそれっぽい言葉を教えたい！」ということで、「日本らしさ」を捉え直すきっかけにもなったようです。

　

　

午後は、いよいよ楽しみにしていた小学校訪問です。バスから下りた瞬間に現地の子どもたちのキラキラした眼差しが降り注ぎ、交流への期待感が一気に膨らみます。訪問先の「コレヒオ・サン・アグスティン（Colegio San Agustin）」は、幼稚舎から高等部までを有する、市内でも有名な私立学校です。本校の生徒たちは、グループに分かれて各クラスにお邪魔しました。しばらくして教室を覗くと、床に膝をついて子どもたちと楽しそうに会話をしていたり、はたまた歩き回って折り紙が苦手そうな子に自ら声をかけていたり。言語の違いにつまずく場面はあれど、コミュニケーションを諦める生徒は１人もおらず、誰もが弟妹と触れ合うかのように輪の中心で笑っていました。

　

　

完成した折り紙の作品にサインを求める行列ができ、教室を出ても名残惜しそうに見送られ、生徒たちは小学生たちの熱量を存分に受け取ったようです。嬉しさ半分驚き半分でホテルに戻ってきた生徒のコメントを、ここでも少し紹介します。

　

「言葉が通じなくて苦戦したが、一緒にいるうちに心が通じ合えた感覚があった。日本で勉強できることの有難さを痛感したし、学ぶこととは『新しい世界を知って、自分の選択肢を広げること』だと気づいた。」

「今日はSDGsの視点からフィリピンの教育について学んだ。小学校の訪問では、温かく迎えてもらえて嬉しかった。日本の同じ年頃なら落ち着いていたり恥ずかしがったりする子もいる中で、フィリピンの小学生たちは遊びや折り紙を純粋に楽しんでくれたのが印象に残った。」

「大歓声で迎えてくれた子供たちと過ごす中で、状況に合わせて臨機応変に対応することの大切さも学びました。短い時間でしたが、とても濃く、別れるのが寂しくなるほど思い出に残りました。 学校に通えない子供たちもいることを知り、学ぶことは知識を得るだけでなく、人とつながるための力になると実感しました。当たり前のように学校へ通い学べる環境に感謝し、これからも学ぶ機会を大切にしていきたいです。 」

　

28人のコメント全てを載せられないのが残念ですが、先週まで学んできたことを実践する日だったこともあり、いつにもまして長文の振り返りが多く見られました。

フィリピンで過ごすのもあと４日。この調子で、できる限りたくさんの気づきを得てほしいと思います。

　

　

Philippines Study Abroad: Halfway Report!

　

Our Philippines trip has officially passed the halfway mark! I’ve joined the group as a chaperone, so I’ll be bringing you the latest updates straight from the field.

　

On August 9th, we had an "Open Day" to recharge. Everyone enjoyed some well-deserved downtime—shopping for souvenirs at the mall and picking out their own dinner spots. The next day, we kicked off the second half of the program with a reflection session and some prep work for our upcoming activities.

We’ve been working closely with the NGO "LOOB," which includes some Japanese university interns. Since they’re close in age, our students felt comfortable brainstorming with them to lead their own icebreaker games.

　

Here are some highlights from our "Reality Check" Q&A:

  • Q: When did you realize, "Yep, I’m definitely Japanese"?
    • "When I almost flushed my toilet paper by habit!"
    • "When I was so happy the convenience store gave me chopsticks when I asked!"
  • Q: Any advice for your pre-trip self?
    • "Bring more Jagarico! You can find Japanese snacks here, but I really miss that specific flavor..."
    • "I was so worried about making friends, but I’d tell myself: 'Don't sweat it, you'll get along great with everyone!'"

　

After our daily Japanese sharing session, we jumped into an SDGｓ workshop. Due to heavy rain, we couldn't visit the Calajunan Sanitary landfill as planned, but we still learned so much through interviews and even tried our hand at making fair-trade paper bead bracelets.

　

On August 11th, it was time to visit a local elementary school. Before going, we studied the reality of education in the Philippines and learned that for many kids, going to school isn't a given due to family or financial reasons. This really made our students rethink their own school lives back in Japan.

For the visit, the students prepared hard—planning how to teach origami and choosing "cool" Japanese phrases to share. It was a great chance for them to rediscover what makes Japanese culture special.

When we arrived at Colegio San Agustin, the kids welcomed us with the biggest, brightest smiles! Our students jumped right in, sitting on the floor to chat or helping kids who were struggling with origami. Even when language was a barrier, nobody gave up. Everyone was laughing and bonding like they were hanging out with their own younger siblings.

By the end, there was even a long line of kids asking for "autographs" on their origami! Our students came back to the hotel feeling a mix of surprise and pure joy.

We only have 4 days left in the Philippines! We hope the students keep soaking up every discovery and making the most of every moment.
